Self-Care Tips for Lash Technicians: Ergonomics and Body Mechanics

Posted by Christina Vargas on

As a lash technician, you spend long hours in a specific posture, which can lead to physical strain and discomfort. Prioritizing ergonomics and proper body mechanics is crucial to prevent injuries and maintain your long-term health.

Key Ergonomics Tips:

  1. Maintain Good Posture:

    • Sit Up Straight: Keep your back straight and avoid slouching.
    • Adjust Your Chair Height: Ensure your feet are flat on the floor, knees at a 90-degree angle.
    • Position Yourself Close to the Client: Reduce unnecessary reaching and twisting.
    • Take Frequent Breaks: Stand up, stretch, and move around to relieve tension.
  2. Optimize Your Workspace:

    • Invest in an Ergonomic Chair: Choose a chair with lumbar support and adjustable height.
    • Use a Comfortable Lash Pillow: A well-designed pillow can reduce neck and shoulder strain.
    • Position Your Lighting: Adequate lighting can reduce eye strain.
    • Organize Your Workspace: Keep your tools within easy reach to minimize unnecessary movements.
  3. Practice Proper Body Mechanics:

    • Minimize Wrist and Hand Strain: Use ergonomic tweezers and avoid excessive force.
    • Avoid Neck and Shoulder Tension: Keep your head and neck aligned with your spine.
    • Take Micro-Breaks: Rest your eyes and hands periodically.

Additional Tips:

  • Strengthen Your Core: A strong core can improve posture and reduce back pain.
  • Use Ergonomic Tools: Invest in high-quality tools designed to reduce strain.
  • Seek Professional Help: If you experience persistent pain, consult with a physical therapist or chiropractor.
  • Stretch Regularly: Incorporate stretches for your neck, shoulders, wrists, and back into your routine.

It’s important to take care of ourselves to ensure longevity in our lash careers. We need to take care of ourselves to be sure we are good to take care of our clients. So remember to take care of yourself! Make sure your wrists are aligned and your neck and shoulders are relaxed. As a lash artist, I occasionally see a chiropractor who created a stretching routine that I'm happy to share with you!

It’s easy to go through our busy days not realizing we too need breaks and stretches, but it does make a big difference in the long run to stop every once in a while to do so.
